Angelus Introduces a Stunning New Tourbillon | hoobae

The Flying Tourbillon Titanium Blue Edition has a skeleton dial with Blue PVD coating, revealing a new hand-wound mechanism. It is a limited edition of 25 pieces.

Angelus has debuted its new Flying Tourbillon Titanium Blue Edition. It has a skeleton dial with a blue PVD treatment that reveals a new hand-wound movement with a flying tourbillon, a titanium case, an interchangeable titanium bracelet, a matte blue alligator leather strap, and a blue rubber strap. It is a limited edition of 25 pieces, each uniquely numbered.

“Flying Tourbillon Titanium is the second installment of Angelus’ modern series. Two years after Chronodate debuted, the company has upgraded its now-famous and instantly recognisable titanium casing with a flying tourbillon calibre. This contemporary vision can be seen in every artistic feature of this 42.5 mm diameter clock.”

Angelus, Arnold & Son, and Manufacture La-Joux Perret (LJP, the renowned movement manufacturer) are all the same company, owned by Citizen Group of Japan. LJP is the integrated manufacturer for Angelus and Arnold & Son, as well as a provider of movements to other watch manufacturers. Mr. Pascal Béchu is the Managing Director of Angelus and Arnold & Son and serves on LJP’s Executive Board.

Key features:

Functions and Operations

Central hours and minutes.

Small seconds on the subdial at 9 o’clock.

A one-minute flying tourbillon appears at 6 p.m.

Dial

Skeleton dial with blue PVD coating.

The hour and minute hands are coated with Super-LumiNova.

The Arabic numerals are covered in Super-LumiNova.

The flange has a blue PVD finish and a minute scale with increments of 5 minutes each.

“The Arabic numerals hung between the flange and the movement provide a dynamic quality. Dynamism in the interaction of solids and voids. Dynamism is the movement’s apertures that allow light in. Dynamism at different levels and depths. The caliber is also dynamic, with juxtaposed circles forming its structure. For this initial edition, everything has been treated with blue PVD.

“The Flying Tourbillon Titanium’s design is supported by the contrast between the colored bridges, flange, and minute circle on the one hand, and the abundant use of white Super-LumiNova on the imposing Arabic numerals on the other. The total effect improves the rhodium plating on the movement’s functioning components.”

Movement

Calibre A-310, a hand-wound movement, powers the hours, minutes, tiny seconds, and one-minute flying tourbillon.

“This modular structure houses an upgraded version of Angelus’ original A-300 caliber. The A-310 caliber is open-worked and built around a sequence of circles, including the main plate and bridges. The little seconds at 9 o’clock optically balance the big barrel between 12 and 1 o’clock, as well as the flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock.”

Diameter: 32.80 mm. Height: 4.30 mm.

Jewels: 23. Frequency: 28,800 mph, or 4 Hz. Power reserve: 60 hours.

Movement finishing includes:

The main plate and bridges are “sunray-brushed, chamfered, and polished with blue PVD treatment.”

Wheels have a round-grained finish.

The Tourbillon carriage has a circular-grained finish and is rhodium-plated.

“The openworked three-armed wheels, a characteristic of Angelus watches, connect to form the most exciting element: the flying tourbillon. The carriage bridge is tilted at 160 degrees, providing an asymmetry that emphasizes the technical rhythm of the Flying Tourbillon Titanium.”

Case, Bracelet, and Strap

A two-part case.

The chamber is built of carbon composite.

The titanium case center, bezel, and crown have satin-finished surfaces and polished chamfers.

“The first, a lightweight, rigid carbon composite container, shields the movement. The second consists of six primary titanium pieces that surround and hold the container in place.”

Diameter: 42.50 mm. Thickness: 11.45 mm.

The dial side has a sapphire crystal with a dual anti-reflective coating.

The caseback contains a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating.

Water-resistant up to 3 bar / 30 meters / 100 feet.

There are several interchangeable bracelet and strap options, including a single-row titanium bracelet with a satin finish. Matte blue alligator leather strap. Blue rubber strap. Each features a titanium folding buckle.

“The open-worked case midsection extends toward the crown, which features the Angelus logo. A 12-notched bezel encircles the sapphire crystal, and the faceted lugs secure the adjustable band system.”

Our thoughts

The new Flying Tourbillon Edition Blue Edition is a futuristic design effort at a skeleton tourbillon watch, and Angelus did an excellent job. Most tourbillons are dressed in classic patterns and precious metals, with little to distinguish them between companies. Angelus has designed an adaptable tourbillon that may be worn on a daily basis using a rubber strap.

Skeleton watches are not often easy to fall in love with, and the Flying Tourbillon Edition Blue Edition is no exception. As I look at the photographs, it becomes more intriguing and harmonious. It would be an appealing addition for collectors who enjoy tourbillons (and other great complications) and have the personality to wear such a bold watch.
