British watchmakers Studio Underd0g X Fears Watch Company Limited (also known as “Fears”) have teamed to unveil The Gimlet, a cushion-case three-hand watch “with a lime twist.”

Richard Benc started Studio Underd0g x Fears during the pandemic. It was officially launched in March 2021 and is one of Britain’s newest and most dynamic watch brands.
“Fears is one of Britain’s oldest family-run watch firms, founded by Edwin Fear in Bristol in 1846. The business operated for 130 years before closing in 1976. Nicholas Bowman-Scargill, Edwin Fear’s great-great-great-grandson, reestablished the firm in 2016, the year it would have celebrated its 170th anniversary. Fears is now based in its historical home city of Bristol, where the watches are created before being handcrafted in Britain.”
Key Features
Functions and Operation
Image: A classic and attractive three-hand watch. The dial is what makes The Gimlet genuinely magical.
Central time in hours, minutes, and seconds.
Hacking seconds allows for a more precise time setting.
At 3 o’clock, all operations are carried out via the crown.
Dial
Image: The entire base dial is coated with lume, rather than only the hands and hour markers, as is typical. The result is quite lovely.
The dial has multiple layers.
Image: Excellent dial design and execution.
- The top dial is composed of 1 mm thick sapphire crystal.
- The upper dial is surrounded by 12-hour markers (a blend of Arabic numerals and baton-shaped markings), and an hour-and-minute scale is graduated in 5-minute increments.
- The base dial is composed of brass and coated with seven layers of Super-LumiNova.
- Hour and minute hands are skeletonized.
“The pale green gradient dial was created using advanced machining processes and materials. It is composed of a base dial with seven layers of custom-made Super-LumiNova pigment. This pigment takes a long time to apply because each layer must cure completely before the next can be used.
A 1mm sapphire disc is mounted on top of the base dial and embellished with the co-branding, minute track, and Arabic numerals. When these two dials are joined together with two slotted head pins, they produce a clean dial with a smooth depth reminiscent of its namesake.”
Image: Floating effect.
“In daylight, the printing details seem to float, casting a shadow on the lower base dial. As the watch moves with respect to the light source, the shadows follow, creating a dynamic and ever-changing appearance. In the dark, the printing details are highlighted by the bright Super-LumiNova base dial and appear to be completely separated from any surface.”

Our Thoughts
Image: A well-executed watch that provides excellent value for its pricing point.

Studio Underd0g has taken the world of horology by surprise. We covered them twice: the new 01Series Generation 3 models and The Uneggspected Series. Their timepieces are playful, colourful, and brilliant, reminding us not to take life too seriously.
Fears Watch Company Limited, also known as “Fears,” is a historical name in British watchmaking that has been revived in recent years. The brand sees a bright future in creating appealing and elegant watches with global appeal.
Image: The most entertaining watch at GTG.
The Gimlet is a very cool watch that I would love to buy. Its proportions are ideal, and the luminescent dial adds to the fun and conversation of watching GTGs. Its Sellita movement will be serviceable by a professional watchmaker in years to come. Its rarity is ensured by its limited production of 200 pieces. The Gimlet is an excellent addition to practically any watch collection. The tricky thing will be getting your hands on one.
