What We Know:
Time+Tide, our friends down under (and over the pond and in the Big Apple), are releasing the third and final watch in their “Surfer Trilogy” series with Zenith, the new Defy Skyline Skeleton “White Surfer” Ceramic, on July 10 at 9 a.m. AEST (July 9, 7 p.m. EST). The watch’s brushed and polished 41mm white ceramic case, bracelet, and folding clasp are accented by a gradient blue skeletonized dial and light blue movement mainplate.
If you need a refresher on their previous two “Surfer Trilogy,” Time+Tide began with a micro-blasted titanium Defy Classic Skeleton “Night Surfer” in 2021, followed by a Defy Skyline Skeleton “Night Surfer” El Primero in 2023. That indicates that the new “White Surfer” is the brightest and most daring of the four. White porcelain is undoubtedly more colorful than anything “night” themed, but it is balanced off by the soft blue tint that runs throughout the watch.
The “White Surfer” is powered by an El Primero 3620 SK automatic movement, which is visible through the display caseback. The watch has a high-beat, 36,000 VpH movement, hour and minute hands, and a high-frequency 1/10th-second subdial at 6 o’clock that spins at dizzying speed. The back features a distinctive light blue oscillating weight with a smooth finish. You’ll also discover the buttons for the quick-change strap system, which allows you to swap to the accompanying white rubber strap.
As indicated by the marks on the case back band, this watch is limited to 100 pieces and has a water resistance of 100m. The retail price in the United States is $19,600.
What We Think.
Summertime (at least in the northern hemisphere) looks like an ideal time for a white ceramic watch like the “White Surfer.” The growing use of ceramics in the industry indicates how far brands have come in working with this challenging and unpredictable material. Time+Tide has done a fantastic job of keeping the watches’ design codes consistent across numerous releases in various models and materials. Nonetheless, while this is the loudest installment in their surfer trilogy, it may also be the most entertaining. I appreciate the icy blue dial, which has grown on me after originally disliking it when I first saw a platinum Daytona; now, it appears to be the ideal hue to mix with a white case like this.
